A new twist on an old standard is sometimes a good thing. In this case it’s definitely a good thing. A few years ago, before my healthier lifestyle, I was craving a grilled ham & cheese and realized there was no butter to be found. So after thinking about it for a few minutes, I decided to try a little extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) instead. Was I ever surprised! Not only did it taste better than butter, it had the most wonderful crispy exterior and an absolutely gorgeous golden color after grilling. Needless to say, I’ve never had a grilled ham & cheese with anything other than EVOO since that day. At the time, I had no idea that EVOO had tons of health benefits…not to mention making your skin and hair more radiant. Now you can’t beat that!!!
Grilled Ham & Cheese
Ingredients:
2 slices all natural (low sodium) ham…Boar’s Head is an excellent choice.
1 slice low fat cheddar
2 slices 100% whole wheat bread (no sugar added)
Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)
Directions:
Heat griddle to 325 degrees or heat skillet turn stove burner to med-low heat. Drizzle each piece of bread with EVOO and spread to cover the entire side. Place bread EVOO side down on griddle or skillet, add ham to one side and cheese to the other. Allow to cook until bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted. You may wish to heat the ham on the griddle for a few seconds on each side before placing on the bread.
EVOO is a much healthier choice than butter or margarine and makes a wonderfully crispy exterior while keeping the inside of the bread soft….YUM!!!
