Strong is Sexy
I slipped on my workout gloves, grabbed a bottle of water, and walked toward the gym door. As with most days, my excitement peaked the closer I got to the door. Once inside the gym the world and all its problems were left outside– as if they never existed.
My workout routine was scribbled on a piece of notebook paper…I followed it just as planned. I decided to switch up my routine today and try something new. Cable crossovers was something I had never attempted until today–so here goes. I moved the pins to 5 lbs, better to start light on the first try to avoid injury. I brought along a copy of my favorite fitness magazine, which had photos and a description of the move. I grasped the handles of the pulleys, looked in the mirror to ensure proper form and pulled the handles downward until they touched. “Too light”, I thought. I moved the pins up to 10 lbs and completed 12 reps on the first set.
As I looked in the mirror I saw a woman that had gone from unhealthy, overweight, out-of-shape and, oh so weak… to a woman that is now strong, sexy and loving life like never before. Gaining strength by training with free weights & machines is a feeling of empowerment. Three years ago, I could barely lift a 5 lb dumbbell. Today, I’ll be doing bicep curls with 25 lbs in each hand.
At 54 I’m feeling more sexy than at 24… and that has to be a good thing. So come on, grab your workout gloves, water bottle and join me by hitting the weights–yes, I’m talking dumbbells, barbells and machines.
